The Kantorovich Foundation was established in July 2001 to honor the memory of one of the most distinguished graduates and professors – Academician Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich (1912 – 1986) of the Faculty of Mathematics at St Petersburg State University, Russia. In addition to significant contributions to functional analysis and the structure of semi-ordered spaces, Professor Kantorovich was the first Soviet citizen to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics (1975).
The Nobel Committee highlighted Professor Kantorovich as the most prominent member of the mathematical school of Soviet economists, distinguished by the thesis that the possibilities of a successful decentralization of production decisions in a centrally planned economy is dependent upon the existence of a rationally constructed system of prices.
At the present transitional stage of the economies of Russia and other former members of the USSR, a problem identified by Professor Kantorovich is of particular importance. In his Nobel Lecture, “Mathematics in Economics: Achievements, Difficulties, Perspectives”, Professor Kantorovich raised the question of the optimal relationship and control structure between centralized and decentralized decision making. By fostering scientific interest in such problems, the Foundation hopes and endeavors to contribute to the development of new ideas in economics, mathematics and related disciplines, and to their applications to the pressing problems of the economy.
The primary objective of the Foundation is to encourage research and the exchange of ideas with reference to the scientific problems raised and suggested by Professor Kantorovich’s life-work, especially in optimization, its applications to the best use of economic resources, and the techniques, mechanisms and institutions for efficient implementation. It is intended in the first place to establish a series of Annual Kantorovich Lectures, to be delivered (in person or by correspondence) by eminent Russian members of the international scientific community on one or more of the above subjects. The annual award of the Lecture is US$1,500. The selection will be made around Professor Kantorovich’s birthday on 19 January each year. Other prospective activities will follow, such as seminars, and informal forums for scientific exchange.
The Kantorovich Foundation is administered by the Center for Game Theory at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Control Processes of St Petersburg State University through an Executive Committee consisting of two Co-chairpersons and three executive members.
Foundation Co-chairs: Leon Petrosjan and David W. K. Yeung.
